Spiritual Yard Sale

I camped out at Zellers this winter to get my son a new Wii. One week later, the dog chewed the cord.

We bought Graham new glasses this winter. They're on the ledge downstairs, where the glass is scratched by the dog's teeth, and wouldn't you know it--the handles are chewed.

I opened a container of sour cream last night to find a green fuzzy village inside.

My kids jumped in the bottom drawer of their dresser till it broke through, now the clothes are falling on the floor.

I over fertilized the yard, so in my attempt to make things pretty, I'm left with burnt patches in the grass.

My mother, 75 years old is suffering from COPD and as a result can't walk the few blocks to our house any more.

Five months pregnant I was told that the fetus was dead. They sent me home where I waited several days for it to abort itself.

Our friend died of cancer this year and left behind a young child.

This world and all it holds is just "stuff;" a spiritual yard sale that I'm trying my best to drive by. But the good news is, I've got someplace better to be, are you coming along? :)

“Lower your expectations of earth. This isn’t heaven, so don’t expect it to be.” ~ Max Lucado

Iris at Sting My Heart is hosting this week. Hop on over there to read her post, and join us along with the other participants.

AFTER THOUGHT: Ok, my post is bleak! It's cloudy out here today and I was up at 6 am. Is that excuse enough? I'm not depressed--really! :)

I love that quote from Max Lucado. It really does put our world into perspective. This is not Heaven but we keep trying to make it so.

I didn't find your post gloomy. In fact, I was smiling, because it is life, real life and I have experienced so much of it. Like the time my youngest son dropped my camera out his second floor bedroom window (along with 90% of his clothes and toys), and when I found out my Dad had cancer. Real life stuff that makes a person long for the "real" Heaven - home.

Hugs to you!

I didn't find this bleak either. In fact, I love the idea of a Spiritual Yard Sale. It is all just stuff anyways right? What really matters is the eternal stuff, but it is so easy to get up and cluttered with all the other stuff.

sooooo true darlene. we put so much effort into what will rust and soon fade away and often the relationship that will be celebrated for all eternity is left on the back burner. i was really convicted when i heard someone say, "when i get to heaven, i want to recognise Him"

i want to know the one who knew me first! shalom to you!

I thought maybe you were writing in the third person - I could have written this! Maybe we co-own a dog?!?!?! LOL! Maybe you bought our dresser from Good Will!?!?! LOL!

Thankfully this IS all temporary!

Bleak, but accurate, Darlene. Life is like that . . . but then there are the opposites . . . the dog that chewed up everything loves you, is loyal and devoted, and cuddles up to you adoringly? (Hubby almost shot the golden retriever before she got through the chewing stage . . . then loved her unconditionally for 11+ years and still misses her.) Excellent post.

Girl, I think your post expressed the quote very well. Yes, we do have our day-to-day struggles, but we all have a better place to be at :)....

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this week's IOW quote.

Be blessed today and always....

(((hugs)))

Darlene,

After reading your post...I didn't find it bleak...I found it to be so very real. Life is hard....but when we know the Author of our life, every day of our life, we have hope!
How much more will our joy be when the struggle is over....and we live in the joy of it all!

Darlene, your words hit us all where we live. Life includes the bleak, which is why we need a Savior and an Overcomer. Thanks for writing so honestly. It blessed me today.

Sometimes "bleak" is OK; it makes us feel we're not alone. We know you won't stay in Bleaville. And you made me raise my hand to answer your invitation/question!
