"Those who read fast reap no more advantage than a bee would by only skimming over the surface of the flower, instead of waiting to penetrate into it, and extract its sweets."

I'm going off a little on the quote this week, because instead of reaping advantage through "reading" I've been penetrating into God's goodness through "writing." Let me explain...
Through the writing of my last book, The Mom Complex, I was inspired by advice from Stephanie Fries who said, "Never be happy with a story until you are in love with every word of it." Stephanie spent countless hours going over the book word by word with me, tweaking each line, until it was just right.
This new book I'm writing is quite a departure from my usual humor writing. But with this book, I can't help but feel that the hand of God is moving my pen, opening doors, and guiding me to places unearthed. Until last week happened. I felt like I hit a brick wall. Still feeling the call upon my life to write this book, I felt discouraged that I was being turned in a different direction.
After explaining my frustrations to Stephanie, she wrote me this letter, and I knew that I wanted to share it this week:
Remember when I told you, that your writing shouldn't be done, until you are
in love with every word of it?
It's interesting to see, how much God has his hands in what you are doing.
It has inspired me in so many ways--to love myself more, to treat Luke
better and do those little things that make his day, to take better care of
myself, my house, my life. Its you--but it's God using your gift of writing,
your creativity, your talent--holding your pen as if it were a paintbrush on
a canvas, marking each word beautifully, with your colors, but with His
brushstroke. Your writing is such a blessing. Every time you call and ask to
read another chapter or paragraph to me, I'm excited because it's like
getting to watch the pages fill up right before my eyes. God's fingerprints
are all over the pages of your book, and just when you think you've got all
ideas in place, He stops you, and whispers softly, "Not yet my child... This
time, its not done until I'm in love with every word of it."

This is BEAUTIFUL. The last sentence made me catch my breath!!!
Laurel, me too! I cry every single time I read that last line. I think I'll have to put this into the book somewhere at the beginning. Just to get the readers all sniffly before they read on! Gotta love those sniffles. :)
That is so awesome...having a friend like God who is helping you along and friend like Stephanie to encourage you to listen to His whispers...
Thank you for sharing, Darlene. I can't wait until God and you have completed this work...I pray that you continue to fall in love with every word...
"...to places unearthed"... what a phrase, Darlene...
I anticipate and pray for the good things God is doing through you and a keyboard... penetrating deeply into His goodnesses indeed.
Press on, sister!
All's grace,
Ann
Oh I love this so much! I write worship songs, and sometimes get very stuck towards the end of one. I'll pray and pray and pray and think and think and think and it just won't come to me. Then right as I'm about to give up, God pours it pours into my soul and I know it is complete, having said exactly what He wanted it to say. Even though this has happened time and time again, it never ceases to amaze me how much He blesses me in that process.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the letter. :)
So very beautiful, really touched my heart.
This is such a great take on the quote! I love it! (I'm also wondering why I didn't think of it--LOL!)
That letter is amazing! Thanks for sharing it.

What awesome encouragement! Thank you for sharing.
It is a wonderful feeling, God's hand in your life's work. For me, I have felt God's hand at the small of my back, pushing me toward hurting children at my school. It is then that I know I am doing his will.
Yes, Darlene, put your friends comments in the book. Maybe the intro? Just reading what she has to say makes me anxious to read what you have to say!
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing another insight on this. It's neat to see the way God directs our readings and writings. :)
A blessing as always, Darlene!
Darlene,
The last sentence just spoke to my heart in such a wonderful way! I'm in the process of completing a devotional book for publication in March called Basking In The Son Room. I have sensed His hand on every page of the rough draft and now am in the editing phase of the project. Now I'll KNOW when it's done!
Thanks for visiting my blog and for the kind words of encouragement.
What an encouraging letter to you! She sound like such a blessing in your life and work.
Darlene,
Stephanie is a wise woman and a rich blessing as a friend. I wanted to cry reading this. God has His fingerprints all over your writing. Your blog, your magazine and books. We are better people because you allow the Master to move your pen.
Mercy Me has a great little song called, "Say What You Wanna Say". He's asking God to reveal Himself because "if the idea's mine, it's nothing but a waste of time." This is the obvious sentiment in your work..I can't wait to see the finished product!
