A Cell Phone?

Dear Diary,

My daughter is barely nine years old and she asked for a cell phone for Christmas. I guess this is where the ho ho ho originated from--Santa's daughter asked for a cell phone and once he started laughing he didn't stop.

Did we get her one? Uh--not. But what we did manage to find was a product called "Chat Now." Chat Now allows you to call your buddy or buddies as long as they are within two miles of your phone. It's also a digital camera and text messager. So, when she's over at a friends house, she can call mom anytime she wants. Basically it's a walkie talkie that looks like a cell phone and rings like one. The digital photos appear black and white on the screen and of poor quality, but the kids think it's way cool.

Listening to the radio the other day, I found out that cell phones are popular with eight year old girls now. This is too weird. She came home one day swinging her rat purse, asking for a laptop, a cell phone or an ipod for Christmas.

Sheesh--kids aren't cheap these days are they? What ever happened to the days when kids scribbled "Baby Giggles," "Kerplunk" or "Etch a Sketch" on their wish list? Where do they get these ideas? I don't know, but I've got to run, the cell phone's ringing off the hook, some email just came in, and I've got a few songs I still need to load on my ipod. :)

You're so right, they get it from us! The older they get the more expensive their toys get! Welcome to the electronic age! Now if Gameboy would only come out with a "game" to teach kids scripture, I'd be all set!!

Their friends must have them. I think you found a great alternative to the cell phone. Many cell companies also offer a service where the child has a cell phone, but can only call 911 (does Canada have 911?) or a few pre-programmed numbers (mom and dad) in their phone. We live in an afluent area where ALL of the kids are on their cell phones, listening to their iPods and driving in their BMWs down the street. At least you have a few years to go until yours start driving.

While I'm on the subject. What is with kids who are in a group and all of them have their iPod earphones in? How rude is that? They don't seem to think so. I don't get it.

LOL! Yep ... our 6 year old definitely gets it from seeing me on my cell phone (got a new *pink* one for Christmas by the way ;) ) and listening to my iPod.

Thanks for letting us know about the Chat Now thingy, though, because my daughter's best friend lives 2 houses down from us and that would be fun for them.

Blessings!!

Cell Phones? IPOD's??? Chat Now???
Uh, I am still back in the days when you used an old tin can tied to a string.
Just when I master one thing, along come 100 more. I don't even know what people are talking about anymore. Slow down world, this old biddy wants to get off.

My thoughts on this are double. On one hand it is sad to see kids growing up so quickly and on the other hand they are being taught about technology from a very young age in school and that is the way the world is going. Is it bad? Sometimes, but not always. I am sure our parents freaked out when we wanted the latest gadget that they had not grown up with and did not understand why we needed such a thing.
In Europe it is quite normal for kids to have these things. They bring with them some difficulties, but they also bring a lot of good things.

Golly, at that age I desperately wanted a pink princess phone. Connected to the wall. With a dial. Did I get one? No.

My 7 year old is obsessed, and I do mean obsessed over Heelies. And no, she didn't get them.

It's hard for me to join the technological revolution I suppose. I'd still be playing my 8 tracks if my husband would let me.

Yeah - I wonder where she's got the idea from :)...

But seriously - I think pretty soon children are going to ask for a Porsche when they are 11...
I think you found a wonderful solution regarding the cell-phone.

Oh My!! Things have certainly changed. When I was eight, let's see now, that was way back in, er...uh..well, lets just say that was a looong time ago.
I hoped for a new dolly, and a colorbook and new crayons because baby sister ate the others.
I am horrified at the things kids want these days and more horrified that parents are meeting the demands. We should let them be children as long as possible. One day they will thank us for it.

They do grow up fast...I'm kinda uncertain how I feel about this...they need to know how to do things in this world...but,I think there is an appropriate time when it can be taught and introduced....so that they are taught how to use things like this for the right reasons....my 2 older girls share a cell phone...but it is for calling us when violin lessons are over if early, etc or to chat occassionaly to an out of town friend...since we go to church an hour away, they have out of town friends. That is about it...no text messaging or anything.

We now have horses because I wanted our children to have something in life that was non-electrical, that didn't move at the speed of technology or fashion. It wasn't the most economical, or the easiest solution. But I know they learned much about life out in the barn they could never have learned on a computer.

What is wrong with us kids asking for these things? It is not like you can't afford them. If you don't spend money on my cell phone bills you will just be loading up on Latte's at the local coffee shop. "The Lord is merciful to those who show mery" Not to those who spend it on themselves. Loosen the purse strings a little and endulge us now and then.
